Garbage Disposal Installation, Repair & Replacement in Lake Stevens, WA

A properly functioning garbage disposal makes kitchen cleanup faster, reduces food waste left inside the sink, and helps keep drain lines flowing more efficiently. When the disposal hums without grinding, leaks beneath the sink, drains slowly, produces unpleasant odors, or stops working altogether, All Valley Plumbing provides professional garbage disposal installation, repair, and replacement throughout Lake Stevens and surrounding Snohomish County communities.

Garbage disposals combine electrical components, rotating grinding mechanisms, seals, mounting hardware, and plumbing connections. A problem that appears to involve only the disposal may also be connected to the kitchen sink drain, dishwasher line, P-trap, shutoff valves, or deeper drainage system. Our experienced plumbers inspect the complete installation so the actual cause can be identified before repairs or replacement are recommended.

Call (425) 357-7420 or request garbage disposal service online to schedule an appointment.

Complete Garbage Disposal Plumbing Services

Whether you need a new disposal installed during a kitchen remodel or an existing unit has stopped working, All Valley Plumbing provides complete plumbing support for residential garbage disposal systems.

Our garbage disposal services include:

  • New garbage disposal installation
  • Garbage disposal replacement
  • Garbage disposal leak repair
  • Drain connection repair
  • Disposal jam diagnosis
  • Humming disposal troubleshooting
  • Sink flange and mounting repair
  • Dishwasher drain connection service
  • P-trap inspection and replacement
  • Kitchen sink clog diagnosis
  • Garbage disposal plumbing during remodeling

Every disposal problem is different. Some units can be restored with a straightforward repair, while older, corroded, leaking, or repeatedly failing disposals may be more practical to replace.

Signs Your Garbage Disposal Needs Professional Attention

Garbage disposal problems often begin with small warning signs before the unit fails completely. Addressing these issues early may help prevent sink backups, cabinet damage, unpleasant odors, and additional drain problems.

Contact a plumber when you notice:

  • The garbage disposal hums but does not grind.
  • The unit will not turn on.
  • Water leaks beneath the kitchen sink.
  • The disposal drains slowly.
  • Water backs up into the opposite sink basin.
  • The unit produces unusual grinding or rattling sounds.
  • Persistent odors remain after cleaning.
  • The disposal frequently trips or shuts off.
  • The mounting assembly feels loose.
  • The sink flange leaks around the top of the disposal.
  • The dishwasher backs up into the sink.
  • The disposal repeatedly jams during normal use.

A humming sound commonly means the motor is receiving power but the grinding mechanism cannot rotate. Continuing to operate a jammed disposal can overheat the motor or cause additional damage.

Garbage Disposal Installation for New and Remodeled Kitchens

Modern kitchen supported by professional garbage disposal and sink plumbing installation

Installing a garbage disposal involves more than attaching an appliance beneath the sink. The sink opening, mounting flange, drain assembly, dishwasher connection, electrical access, cabinet space, and existing plumbing configuration must all be compatible with the new unit.

Professional installation may include:

  • Removing the old garbage disposal
  • Inspecting the sink flange and mounting system
  • Checking available cabinet space
  • Installing the new mounting assembly
  • Connecting the disposal to the drain piping
  • Connecting the dishwasher drain where applicable
  • Inspecting the P-trap and surrounding plumbing
  • Testing the unit for vibration and leakage
  • Verifying proper sink drainage

For larger kitchen upgrades involving sinks, faucets, dishwashers, refrigerator water lines, gas appliances, or drain relocation, visit our kitchen plumbing and remodeling services page.

Garbage Disposal Replacement

Garbage disposals do not last forever. Internal corrosion, worn seals, motor failure, damaged grinding components, and repeated jams can eventually make replacement more cost-effective than continued repair.

Replacement may be recommended when:

  • The disposal leaks from the body of the unit.
  • The motor has failed.
  • The grinding components are severely damaged.
  • The unit is heavily corroded.
  • Repairs are becoming frequent.
  • The disposal is undersized for the household’s needs.
  • The existing unit produces excessive vibration or noise.
  • The disposal no longer processes food waste effectively.

When selecting a replacement, homeowners may consider motor size, noise level, grinding performance, household usage, cabinet clearance, and compatibility with the existing plumbing and electrical setup.

Garbage Disposal Leaks Beneath the Sink

A leaking garbage disposal can damage the cabinet base, flooring, nearby walls, and stored household items. Because the disposal has several possible leak points, identifying the source is important before repairs begin.

Common leak locations include:

  • The sink flange above the disposal
  • The mounting ring or gasket
  • The dishwasher connection
  • The drain outlet
  • The P-trap or adjoining drain pipe
  • The bottom housing of the disposal
  • Loose or deteriorated seals

A leak around a plumbing connection may be repairable. Water leaking through the disposal housing itself often indicates internal corrosion or seal failure and may require replacement.

Why Is My Garbage Disposal Humming?

A disposal that hums but does not grind is usually jammed, although motor or internal component problems are also possible. Food waste, bones, utensils, glass, metal objects, or hardened debris can prevent the grinding assembly from rotating.

Before attempting any inspection, the disposal should be turned off and disconnected from power. Never place your hand inside a disposal. If the unit remains jammed after basic manufacturer-approved troubleshooting, professional service helps reduce the risk of injury or additional appliance damage.

Our plumbers can inspect the unit, remove accessible obstructions, test the disposal, and determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

Garbage Disposal Clogs and Slow Kitchen Sink Drains

Clogged kitchen sink caused by garbage disposal or drain buildup

A garbage disposal may operate normally while the sink still drains slowly. In that situation, grease, food waste, soap residue, starches, or other debris may have accumulated inside the drain pipe rather than the disposal itself.

Common causes include:

  • Grease and cooking oil buildup
  • Food scraps lodged inside the P-trap
  • Coffee grounds
  • Fibrous vegetable waste
  • Rice, pasta, and other expanding foods
  • Soap residue
  • Improper disposal use
  • A restriction farther inside the drain line

Our plumbers can determine whether the blockage is located inside the disposal, sink trap, branch drain, or a deeper section of the plumbing system. Learn more about our clogged sink drain cleaning services.

Garbage Disposals and Dishwasher Drainage

Many dishwashers discharge wastewater through a connection at the garbage disposal. If this connection is clogged, improperly installed, or restricted, the dishwasher may fail to drain correctly or wastewater may back up into the kitchen sink.

Possible signs of a dishwasher-disposal plumbing problem include:

  • Water remaining inside the dishwasher
  • Water entering the sink during a dishwasher cycle
  • Unpleasant odors from the disposal
  • Leakage at the dishwasher hose connection
  • Recurring kitchen sink backups
  • Gurgling sounds during dishwasher drainage

Our plumbers can inspect the disposal inlet, dishwasher drain hose, air gap where applicable, sink drain, and adjoining plumbing to identify the source of the problem.

What Should Not Go Down a Garbage Disposal?

Garbage disposals are designed to process small amounts of appropriate food waste, but they are not intended to handle every type of kitchen debris. Avoiding certain materials can help reduce clogs, jams, odors, and premature disposal failure.

Items that should generally stay out of the disposal include:

  • Cooking grease and oil
  • Large bones
  • Glass, metal, plastic, or utensils
  • Coffee grounds
  • Eggshells in large quantities
  • Fibrous vegetable peels and stalks
  • Rice and pasta in large amounts
  • Paint, chemicals, or household cleaners
  • Non-food waste
  • Large amounts of food at one time

Running cold water during appropriate disposal use and allowing the water to continue briefly afterward can help move processed waste through the drain line.

Recurring Garbage Disposal Clogs May Point to a Deeper Drain Problem

If your garbage disposal repeatedly jams, the sink continues draining slowly, or water backs up shortly after the disposal is cleared, the problem may extend farther into the kitchen drain system. Grease, sludge, food waste, soap residue, and mineral buildup can accumulate inside the branch drain, creating restrictions that a simple disposal repair will not resolve.

Recurring problems may be caused by:

  • Heavy grease buildup inside the drain line
  • Food debris trapped beyond the P-trap
  • Improper drain slope
  • Damaged or deteriorated drain piping
  • A restriction farther inside the plumbing system
  • Multiple kitchen fixtures sharing a blocked drain line
  • Problems involving the home’s main sewer line

When the problem is not limited to the disposal itself, our plumbers can inspect the surrounding plumbing and recommend the most appropriate drain-cleaning or repair method.

Sewer Camera Inspections for Persistent Kitchen Drain Problems

Sewer camera inspection used to diagnose recurring garbage disposal and kitchen drain problems

When kitchen drain backups continue returning, a sewer camera inspection may help identify the cause without unnecessary guesswork. A waterproof camera is guided through qualifying drain and sewer lines, allowing our plumbers to view the interior condition of the pipe.

A camera inspection may identify:

  • Heavy grease and food buildup
  • Foreign objects inside the drain
  • Cracked or broken piping
  • Offset or separated pipe joints
  • Root intrusion farther inside the sewer line
  • Corrosion or deterioration
  • Collapsed pipe sections
  • Recurring blockage locations

This information can help determine whether the problem requires conventional drain cleaning, hydro jetting, targeted pipe repair, or more extensive sewer service.

Hydro Jetting for Heavy Grease and Food Buildup

Hydro jetting equipment used to clean grease and food buildup from kitchen drain lines

Kitchen drains are especially vulnerable to grease, oils, food residue, soap, and sludge. Over time, this buildup can coat the interior walls of the pipe and gradually reduce drainage capacity.

Hydro jetting uses controlled high-pressure water to clean qualifying drain and sewer lines. Unlike a basic drain-opening method that may create only a small passage through the blockage, hydro jetting can remove buildup from a larger portion of the pipe’s interior surface.

Hydro jetting may be appropriate for:

  • Recurring kitchen sink clogs
  • Heavy grease accumulation
  • Food waste buildup
  • Restaurant and commercial kitchen drains
  • Sludge inside branch drain lines
  • Recurring backups after standard drain cleaning
  • Preventative drain maintenance

Before hydro jetting is recommended, the drain line should be evaluated to confirm that the pipe material and condition can safely accommodate the service.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Garbage Disposal?

Some garbage disposal problems can be repaired, while others indicate the unit has reached the end of its useful service life. The right choice depends on the age of the disposal, the type of failure, repair cost, condition of the housing, and whether the unit continues experiencing recurring problems.

Repair may be appropriate when:

  • The unit is relatively new.
  • The problem involves a removable jam.
  • A drain connection or mounting component is leaking.
  • The disposal still operates normally after the obstruction is removed.
  • The surrounding plumbing remains in good condition.

Replacement may be the better option when:

  • The motor has failed.
  • The disposal leaks from its internal housing.
  • The unit is severely corroded.
  • Grinding performance has significantly declined.
  • Repairs are becoming frequent.
  • The existing disposal is undersized or excessively noisy.
  • Replacement parts are unavailable or uneconomical.

Our plumbers can inspect the disposal and explain whether repair or replacement is likely to provide the better long-term value.

Choosing the Right Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are available in different motor sizes, sound levels, grinding configurations, and construction materials. Selecting the right model can improve performance while reducing jams, vibration, and noise.

Factors to consider include:

  • Household size
  • Frequency of kitchen use
  • Typical food waste volume
  • Available cabinet space
  • Existing sink and drain configuration
  • Dishwasher connection requirements
  • Desired noise level
  • Motor capacity
  • Warranty and product quality

A properly sized unit generally performs more reliably than a disposal that is too small for the household’s normal usage.

Garbage Disposal Maintenance Tips

Basic maintenance and proper use can help extend the life of your garbage disposal while reducing odors, jams, and drain problems.

  • Run cold water while using the disposal.
  • Feed appropriate food waste gradually.
  • Allow the water to run briefly after grinding stops.
  • Avoid putting grease, oil, and fibrous foods down the disposal.
  • Keep utensils and non-food objects away from the sink opening.
  • Do not overload the disposal.
  • Address unusual sounds or leaks promptly.
  • Schedule professional drain cleaning if slow drainage develops.

Never place your hand inside the disposal, even when the unit appears to be turned off.

Garbage Disposal Plumbing for Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen remodeling often involves replacing the sink, faucet, cabinetry, dishwasher, countertops, and disposal at the same time. Coordinating the plumbing during the remodeling process helps ensure the new disposal aligns correctly with the sink drain, dishwasher connection, and available cabinet space.

Our plumbers can assist with:

  • New disposal installation
  • Sink and faucet plumbing
  • Dishwasher drain connections
  • Kitchen drain relocation
  • Island sink plumbing
  • New shutoff valves and supply lines

Frequently Asked Questions About Garbage Disposals

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not grinding?

A humming disposal is usually receiving power, but the grinding mechanism is unable to rotate. This may be caused by food waste, utensils, glass, bones, or other debris jamming the unit. Turn off the disposal and disconnect power before any inspection. Never place your hand inside the disposal.

Can a plumber repair a garbage disposal?

Yes. Some disposal problems can be repaired, especially when the issue involves a removable jam, loose mounting hardware, leaking drain connection, dishwasher hose, or surrounding plumbing. Internal motor failure, housing leaks, or severe corrosion may make replacement the better option.

How do I know when my garbage disposal needs replacement?

Replacement may be recommended when the disposal leaks through its housing, repeatedly jams, has a failed motor, is heavily corroded, produces excessive noise, or no longer grinds food waste effectively.

Why is my garbage disposal leaking under the sink?

Leaks may develop at the sink flange, mounting assembly, dishwasher connection, drain outlet, P-trap, adjoining piping, or disposal housing. A plumber can identify the source and determine whether the connection can be repaired or the unit should be replaced.

Why does my kitchen sink drain slowly even though the disposal works?

The blockage may be inside the P-trap or farther down the kitchen drain line. Grease, food debris, soap residue, coffee grounds, and starches can accumulate inside the piping even when the disposal itself is operating normally.

Can a garbage disposal cause dishwasher drainage problems?

Yes. Many dishwashers discharge through a connection at the garbage disposal. A clogged disposal inlet, blocked drain line, leaking hose, or improper connection may prevent the dishwasher from draining correctly.

Do you install customer-supplied garbage disposals?

Yes. If you have already purchased a disposal, our plumbers can inspect the model, confirm compatibility with the sink and plumbing, remove the existing unit, and install the replacement.

What size garbage disposal should I buy?

The appropriate disposal depends on household size, kitchen use, available cabinet space, sink configuration, food-waste volume, and desired noise level. A larger household or frequently used kitchen may benefit from a more powerful unit.

Should I put grease down the garbage disposal?

No. Grease and cooking oil may harden inside the drain line and contribute to recurring kitchen clogs. Allow grease to cool and dispose of it in the trash instead.

Can hydro jetting help with recurring kitchen drain clogs?

Yes, when the pipe is suitable for the service. Hydro jetting can remove heavy grease, sludge, food residue, and other buildup from qualifying kitchen drain and sewer lines after the piping has been evaluated.

Yes. All Valley Plumbing serves Arlington, Everett, Marysville, Snohomish, Monroe, Granite Falls, Camano Island, Bothell, Mill Creek, Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Edmonds, Stanwood, Smokey Point, Sultan, and surrounding Washington communities.

All Valley Plumbing helped us with a leaking water line that had started causing low pressure in part of the house. They arrived on time, found the source quickly, and explained the repair clearly before getting started. The plumber worked neatly, tested everything thoroughly, and left the area clean when the job was finished. Duston and David came out to move our pipes so we could have a more functional washer and dryer area. We live in a hundred year old home so space is tight. They were able to re-pipe and install a new water box against the wall we wanted it on. They came to our house wtih massive amounts of knowledge and did not string us along. When they were working they checked out a leak that another company quotes us work on. There price was half the cost of the other business. They explained that the orginal work that was done on our house seven years ago before purchase was not up to par. The copper pipe had not been solder incorrectly. When they were testing the water they found another joint had not been solder incorrectly again. They were quickly able to fix the problem and give us valuable information for future plumbing needs. Not once did I feel like they were here to nickle and dime us and charge more than what was required. They are a smaller business and they do it right. Will be going to them for all of our future needs. Thanks again Duston and David really appreciate the work.
